About the happy image of STABILO
STABILO was invented in 1925 and is part of the Schwan-STABILO Group. They manufacture a wide range of products that can be used to mark texts, to write the most beautiful hand lettering and to make outstanding drawings. For almost a hundred years, they have been making products that are just like the brand itself: trend-conscious, inspiring and with a clear vision.
STABILO has defined 5 fundamental goals that the entire team strives for on a daily basis. Teamwork, mutual confidence, success, self-criticism and the pursuit of common goals are built on the corporate culture of STABILO.
Just like we do at Merchandise Essentials, STABILO is also working toward a better planet. STABILO Together is the name of their company-wide sustainable initiative. In doing so, they collaborate with their partners and fans to create a sustainable tomorrow.
Sustainability has always been a key issue for them. This includes the raw materials they use, production and transport and even how they use their electricity. By the year of 2025, they want to be carbon neutral. They are trying to achieve this goal through various initiatives:
- Their best-selling products, STABILO Boss and STABILO Point, are made using 100% climate neutral electricity.
- 70% of their products are made in the European Union.
- The inks they are using are 97,5% water-based.
- 100% of the pencils they produce are made from certified wood.
STABILO’s sustainable image is also reflected in their products. They recently released a sustainable highlighter, the STABILO Green Boss. This highlighter combines high quality with durability and is the perfect choice for the environmentally conscious consumer. The marker is made from 83% recycled plastic and is refillable. Amazing, isn’t it?!
A sustainable company should collaborate with a sustainable partner, right? At Merchandise Essentials, we also hold sustainability in high regard.
In fact, it’s a match made in heaven. As a textile company, we want to make a lasting positive impact on the planet. A collection inspired by the playful image of STABILO
Markers in all possible colors, all the tools to make beautiful drawings, STABILO seems to have it all. The only thing missing is a clothing collection fully adapted to their fabulous corporate identity. After fully analyzing the company’s corporate identity and target audience, we came up with a fictional design that will please all the cool kids among us for sure.
We took a look at their recognizable style. The first thing we noticed were the bright and cheery colors they use in their corporate identity. Next to that, their website contains a lot of inspiration and ‘handwritten details’, which breathes their brand. It brings instant happiness and that’s exactly how we wanted the design to be.
One of the most popular products of STABILO are the pastel markers. Pastel colors are hot nowadays! For that reason, we used them in the design of the clothing. This makes the merch wearable, on trend and a must-have for your closet!
We’ve put the STABILO logo clearly visible on the merchandise so that it’s recognizable. But we didn’t go for the full logo and name, but only the all-known swan in the bright red Stabilo-color.
STABILO’s target audience are all the people who want to let their creativity run wild. We anticipated this in the design and created a bucket hat for a sunny day out and a hip tote bag to pack your goods and be creative at any place. Exactly what they need, don’t you think?
A thoughtful design process
For the design of the bucket hat, we used the CMYK colors of the pastel markers. CMYK colors are composed of four base colors: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Key (Black). The amount of each color is between 0% (none of that color) and 100% (all of the color). We used the exact CMYK color codes of the markers to reflect the brand 100%. Successful result, don’t you think?
In addition, all colors of the hat are sublimated. Sublimated what?! For printing on materials or products, sublimation is used to "bake in" a print into the surface of the material itself. The result is a high quality, bright and vibrant full-color print that is scratch and wash resistant.
The recognizable logo from STABILO is embroidered on the hat. Embroidery provides a lovely, high-quality look with attention to details. By including the logo on the merchandise, there is a subtle hint to the brand and that way, they gain some extra brand awareness.
STABILO is known for its bright colors and happy vibes. For the tote bag, we drew inspiration from their well-known felt-tip pens. The same colors and lines appear on them and for that reason, it becomes very recognizable.
The bag itself could be made out of Pantone-dyed fabric. If the right Pantone-color is provided, an exact match can be assured. Our create tote bags are fully customizable. We went for red handles and a bright orange bag.
The tote bag reflects the brand once more. Because of the colors and logo, it’s easily recognizable. Furthermore, a tote bag is really useful. You can store all your stuff in it, allowing you to be creative not just at home, but also when you’re on the road. Tote bags are also taken everywhere so that it provides extra visibility by bystanders. Real win-win!
The versatility of merch
1. Connecting merch to a contest
STABILO’s target audience are creative school children or students who like that little bit extra. They are very involved with their target group and they have a lot of great initiatives:
- On their website, they offer educational services where children can learn to write and draw.
- They provide a lot of inspiration to be creative with their products.
- They even have a community where you can submit your coolest artworks on Instagram. When you add the hashtag #STABILO you get the chance to be featured on STABILO’s channel. Super nice, don’t you think?
With our merch, they can organize a contest for the community. Every month, they can choose the best piece of artwork and reward it with a cool piece of merch. A bucket hat or tote bag for example? A great way to motivate your fans and strengthen the community.
2. Back to school
‘Back To School’ promotions run every year from the summer months through Oc
tober. These promotions can include discounts or free gifts when purchasing certain products. Since STABILO is closely related to school, they of course also participate in the Back To School actions.
The merchandise we designed can also be part of these promotions. When you buy a pack of pastel markers, you get a free tote bag, for example?
Through such actions, the brand gains more sympathy from consumers. They will also be more triggered to make a purchase and it creates additional engagement.
3. STABILO ambassadors
Why does the merch have to be action-related when it just can be sold to the real STABILO fans?
STABILO is tagged by hundreds of fans every day on Instagram to show what beautiful artworks they could accomplish by the use of STABILO’s tools. For that reason, it would be really nice if the merchandise was for sale. That way, the fans may carry their pens and other essentials in their own STABILO tote bags or enjoy the sun protected by their bucket hats.
The merchandise can enrich the STABILO community even further. The fans can demonstrate their enthusiasm for working with STABILO’s tools and show it to the outside world by wearing the merch.
